MSC Poesia FAQs: What First-Time MSC Cruisers Need to Know

If you’re sailing on MSC Poesia for the first time, these MSC Poesia FAQs cover some of the things that can feel different from the cruise lines you’re already used to. That was certainly the case for me. MSC Poesia was my first MSC cruise, and before boarding I’d read plenty of mixed opinions about MSC, particularly around embarkation, dining, entertainment and how organised everything would feel.

What I found was that many of the things that initially seem unusual make much more sense once you understand how MSC operates. From the multiple embarkation ports and fixed dining times to the MSC for Me app, Wi-Fi rules and evening dress codes, these are the questions I would’ve wanted answered before my first MSC Poesia cruise.

Why Does Embarkation Feel Different on MSC Poesia?

Passengers checking in at Southampton Cruise Terminal for an MSC Poesia cruise
Check-in at Southampton Cruise Terminal before boarding MSC Poesia

One of the biggest differences with MSC in Europe is that passengers can embark and disembark at several ports during the same cruise. That means embarkation day doesn’t necessarily involve the whole ship emptying in the morning before an entirely new group of passengers boards. You might have passengers leaving, others joining and plenty more simply continuing their cruise.

Before sailing with MSC, I’d seen this happening from the outside at Civitavecchia. There were passengers with luggage moving in different directions, coaches arriving and people joining and leaving the ship at the same time. It looked busy, and I wondered whether MSC Poesia would feel disorganised because of it.In reality, it didn’t.

Embarkation can initially feel busier than it does on a typical Southampton turnaround, but once you’re onboard and the ship sails, things settle down very quickly. Your cruise card will usually be waiting outside your cabin rather than handed to you when you check in.

You’ll then need to activate the card for onboard purchases using one of the designated machines onboard. The process only takes a few minutes, but it’s worth knowing about beforehand because it works differently from some other cruise lines. Once activated, purchases throughout your cruise are charged to your onboard account using the card.

How Does the Muster Drill Work on MSC Poesia?

The MSC muster process is straightforward, but there are several stages and you need to complete them in the correct order. You’ll be given a specific time to watch the safety video in your cabin. After watching it, you dial the number provided to confirm that you’ve completed the video. You then need to physically visit your assigned muster station, where a crew member checks you off. If you miss part of the process, you’ll be reminded to complete it.

The exact order can vary slightly depending on the European port where you embark, but the important thing is simply to complete everything when instructed. Once you’ve watched the video, confirmed it and visited the muster station, you’re done and can get on with the rest of your cruise.

How Does Dinner Work on MSC Poesia?

Dinner on MSC Poesia uses fixed dining, and this is one of the most important things to understand before your cruise. On my sailing, the evening sittings were at 5:30pm and 8pm. Your allocated dining time, restaurant and table are shown on your cruise card.

Unlike flexible dining systems where you choose a different time each evening, your MSC Poesia dining allocation remains the same throughout the cruise unless you request a change. If your assigned time doesn’t work for you, it’s worth asking as soon as possible on embarkation day.

On my cruise, the dining desk was set up close to the Zebra Bar, and I found changing my allocation straightforward because I dealt with it early. The longer you leave it, the fewer alternatives may be available.

MSC Poesia has two main dining rooms. Il Palladio is on Deck 6 and is easy to recognise from its red chairs and red carpeting. Le Fontane is on Deck 5 and has blue chairs and blue carpeting. The dinner menus are the same in both restaurants, so your allocation doesn’t affect what you can order.

Le Fontane is also used for breakfast and lunch, including sea-day brunch. That can initially cause some confusion because both restaurants don’t operate in exactly the same way throughout the day.

What Is Entertainment Like on MSC Poesia?

Entertainment on MSC Poesia feels quite different from some British cruise lines. You don’t need to book the theatre shows in advance. You can simply arrive before the performance and choose an available seat. On my cruise, I never found it particularly difficult to get into a show.

The biggest difference is the type of entertainment. MSC attracts passengers from many different countries, so theatre productions need to work for an audience who may speak several different languages. Because of that, performances tend to focus heavily on music, singing, dancing and visual entertainment rather than stand-up comedy or shows built around lots of spoken dialogue.

The theatre shows are also relatively short, usually around 35 minutes. I actually found this worked well because seeing a show didn’t take over the whole evening. You could watch the theatre production and still have plenty of time afterwards for live music or drinks elsewhere on the ship.

The bars and lounges also feature plenty of live entertainment, including singers, bands, pianists and themed music evenings. There are quizzes and other organised activities, but they weren’t as dominant as I’ve experienced on some P&O cruises.

If your ideal cruise entertainment involves lots of comedy, MSC may feel noticeably different. But if you enjoy live music and shorter production shows, there’s plenty going on.

What Is Included in an MSC Poesia Cabin?

My MSC Poesia cabin had most of the essentials I needed for the cruise, although there are a few useful things to know before packing. There was a kettle and a small fridge in the cabin. Shampoo and shower gel were provided in dispensers in the bathroom, and there was also a fixed hairdryer.

You don’t need to pack pool towels. Bathroom towels are provided in the cabin, while pool towels can be collected and exchanged onboard near the pools.

The cabin had enough storage for the cruise, and suitcases fitted underneath the bed, which made it much easier to completely unpack and keep the room tidy.

If you’re travelling from the UK, remember to bring a suitable adaptor. MSC Poesia uses European two-pin and US-style electrical sockets.

One thing you won’t find onboard is a passenger self-service launderette. MSC offers paid laundry and pressing services, but there isn’t a laundry room where you can wash clothes yourself during the cruise.

Is There a Dress Code on MSC Poesia?

MSC has themed evenings, including White Night and Gala Night, but the dress code was much more relaxed than some first-time MSC passengers might expect.

You can check the daily schedule in the MSC for Me app to see when the themed evenings are taking place.White Night tends to be one of the busiest themed events, and plenty of passengers wear white if they’re attending the party.

Gala Night is described as an opportunity to dress to impress, but I didn’t find it rigidly enforced. You’ll see everything from suits and smart dresses to much more relaxed smart-casual outfits. If you enjoy dressing up, you certainly can.But if you’d rather wear something smart-casual, you won’t feel out of place.

Why Does MSC Poesia Feel More International?

MSC Poesia attracts a genuinely international mix of passengers on its European itineraries. You’ll hear several languages spoken around the ship, and announcements over the tannoy are made in multiple languages.

This is noticeable from your first day onboard and contributes to MSC feeling quite different from a cruise line where most passengers come from one country.I actually enjoyed the international atmosphere.

Many of the bars and lounges also have larger shared seating areas, so you often find yourself sitting close to other passengers rather than in small isolated groups. I found this gave MSC Poesia a surprisingly social atmosphere, which worked particularly well as a solo traveller.

Do You Need Wi-Fi to Use the MSC for Me App?

The MSC for Me app is one of the main tools for checking daily information onboard MSC Poesia

You don’t need to buy an internet package to use the MSC for Me app onboard MSC Poesia. It’s worth downloading the app before leaving home because it quickly becomes one of the most useful tools onboard. Once connected to the ship’s internal Wi-Fi network, the app works without purchasing a paid internet plan.

You can use it to check the daily programme, find out when themed evenings are taking place, see entertainment schedules, confirm dining information and monitor your onboard spending.

Paid internet works differently. One particularly important thing to understand is that an MSC Wi-Fi package is linked to the device you initially activate it on. Once you’ve logged in using one device, you can’t simply log out and move that same connection to another phone or tablet later. That’s different from some cruise lines where you can swap between devices, and it’s something worth considering before choosing which device to connect.

MSC also offers different internet packages. The lower Browse package isn’t designed for streaming, so if you want to stream video or make video calls, you’ll need the appropriate higher-tier package.

Is an MSC Drinks Package Worth It?

A cocktail onboard MSC Poesia, available with MSC’s Easy Drinks Package

Whether an MSC drinks package represents good value will depend on how much you realistically drink. MSC Poesia was the cheapest cruise I’d ever booked, and before sailing I wondered whether adding a drinks package would still make sense.

What surprised me was that MSC’s individual drink prices were generally reasonable compared with some other cruise lines I’d sailed with. That changes the calculation. If you’ll have several alcoholic drinks every day, a package might work well. If you tend to have only a couple of drinks, paying individually may be cheaper.

It’s worth looking at the package price for your particular cruise and comparing it against what you’re actually likely to order rather than assuming you automatically need one.

How Does Disembarkation Work on MSC Poesia?

Luggage placed outside an MSC Poesia cabin ready for disembarkation the following mornin

I’d read comments before my cruise suggesting that MSC disembarkation could be chaotic because passengers are getting on and off at different European ports. That wasn’t my experience. Passengers are given colour-coded luggage tags together with an allocated disembarkation time. If you follow the instructions and leave with your assigned group, the system flows reasonably steadily.

You can also choose self-disembarkation, but you’ll need to carry all your own luggage off the ship and follow the instructions for the earlier departure.

MSC’s multiple embarkation-port system can initially sound complicated, but from a passenger perspective the actual disembarkation process was straightforward.

Is MSC Poesia Good for a First MSC Cruise?

MSC Poesia FAQs - MSC Poesia docked in Hamburg during a Northern Europe cruise

MSC Poesia showed me quite quickly that MSC isn’t necessarily difficult or disorganised. It simply operates differently in several areas. Once I understood the multiple embarkation ports, fixed dining, muster process, MSC for Me app and the more international style of entertainment, the experience made much more sense.

The biggest mistake would probably be boarding expecting everything to work exactly as it does on P&O, Princess or another cruise line you’ve already sailed with. It won’t. But once you understand those differences, MSC Poesia is a straightforward ship to settle into.
