The Key on Liberty of the Seas: Is It Worth It?

The Key on Liberty of the Seas gave me priority boarding, VOOM internet, a quieter embarkation lunch, reserved seating at selected shows and a much easier departure at the end of the cruise.

I’ve now used Royal Caribbean’s The Key several times, but my Liberty of the Seas experience was particularly useful because I sailed on the ship twice back-to-back from Southampton. That gave me the chance to see which benefits made a real difference, which ones mattered less and whether I would pay for The Key again on Liberty of the Seas.

This article focuses specifically on my experience onboard. For a complete explanation of what Royal Caribbean’s The Key includes, who has to buy it and how to compare it with VOOM, read my full Royal Caribbean The Key guide.

My Liberty of the Seas The Key Experience

The Key on Liberty of the Seas includes benefits such as priority boarding, VOOM internet, an embarkation lunch, reserved seating and easier departure arrangements

I sailed on Liberty of the Seas for two consecutive cruises from Southampton. The first was a short two-night sailing to Le Havre, followed by a seven-night cruise visiting Bilbao, Lisbon and Vigo. I purchased The Key because I would normally buy Royal Caribbean’s VOOM internet anyway. The difference between the two prices was small enough that the additional benefits felt worth trying.

The package included priority boarding, carry-on luggage drop-off, an embarkation lunch, VOOM Surf and Stream internet, reserved seating at selected shows and additional departure benefits. I didn’t use every benefit, but the ones I did use made embarkation and disembarkation noticeably easier.

Was Priority Boarding Worth It on Liberty of the Seas?

First view of the Royal Promenade after the refit on Liberty of the Seas with The Key
One of the benefits of The Key on Liberty of the Seas is priority boarding, which can let you be among the first onboard and enjoy quieter views of the Royal Promenade after the refit

Priority boarding was one of the most useful benefits of The Key on Liberty of the Seas. My experience sailing from Southampton has been that Key guests are normally allowed to board around half an hour before general boarding begins. You still complete the normal security, passport and document checks, but Key guests are placed in a priority group once the terminal is ready to start boarding.

That extra time onboard was noticeable. The ship was quieter, and I had time to begin exploring before the main boarding groups arrived. On a short cruise, that matters even more because every additional hour onboard represents a larger part of the trip.

Priority boarding doesn’t guarantee that there will never be delays. If the ship is late arriving, the terminal is busy or boarding has been held for another reason, The Key cannot prevent that. However, when the process is running normally, it gives you a calmer start and gets you onto the ship before the main crowd.

How Did The Key Carry-On Bag Service Work?

Designated The Key drop-off point on Liberty of the Seas
The designated The Key drop-off point on Liberty of the Seas is where guests can leave their carry-on luggage before heading to the embarkation lunch

Once onboard Liberty of the Seas, I could leave my carry-on luggage at the designated Key drop-off point near the main dining room. This meant I didn’t need to keep my cabin bag and camera equipment with me while waiting for the rooms to open.

Cruise cabins are often not ready when the first passengers board, so anything you carry through the terminal would normally stay with you. With The Key, the bags are labelled and delivered to your cabin once the rooms are available.

I still kept my passport, valuables, medication and anything essential with me, but being able to leave the heavier items behind made embarkation day much easier. It meant I could sit down for lunch and then explore the ship without dragging luggage through busy public areas. This isn’t the most exciting benefit on paper, but it is one of the most practical once you are onboard.

What Was The Key Lunch Like on Liberty of the Seas?

A starter served during The Key embarkation lunch on Liberty of the Seas, one of the dining benefits included with The Key

The Key welcome lunch on Liberty of the Seas was held in the main dining room on embarkation day. The menu was based on Chops Grille, Royal Caribbean’s speciality steakhouse. I have also eaten lunch in Chops Grille, so I was able to compare the two experiences.

The Key lunch was not exactly the same as dining in the restaurant. The menu was smaller and did not include the same range of side dishes. However, the style of the food was similar. The choices included starters such as shrimp cocktail and mushroom soup, followed by main courses including a steak burger, branzino and filet mignon. It was a proper three-course meal with table service rather than a basic embarkation-day lunch.

The main advantage was the setting. The Windjammer is usually at its busiest after boarding because cabins are still closed and many passengers head directly to the buffet. The main dining room was much calmer. I could drop off my carry-on luggage, sit down at a reserved table and have lunch without trying to find space in a busy buffet. By the time the meal had finished, the cabins were ready. That combination of good food and convenience made the lunch one of the strongest parts of The Key on Liberty of the Seas.

Was The Key Reserved Seating Good on Liberty of the Seas?

The Key reserved seating area in the Platinum Theatre on Liberty of the Seas
The Key reserved seating area in the Platinum Theatre on Liberty of the Seas. On my cruise, The Key seats were on the top level, with a crew member holding a The Key sign to show guests where to go

Reserved seating was available at selected performances in the Royal Theatre and Studio B. The value of this benefit depended heavily on the venue.

In the Royal Theatre, the reserved section was on the upper level. The seats were towards the front of that level and had a clear view, but they were not necessarily the best seats in the theatre. Passengers who arrived early without The Key could choose seats lower down or closer to the centre. For that reason, I would not buy The Key solely for the Royal Theatre seating.

Studio B was different. The ice shows are among the most popular entertainment options on Liberty of the Seas, and Studio B is a much smaller venue. Some seats have significantly better views of the ice than others, and popular performances can fill quickly. There was a designated Key section, and members of staff checked that it remained available for eligible guests.

You still needed to arrive before the reserved seating was released, but the benefit removed some of the pressure to queue for a long time. For me, Studio B was where the reserved seating became genuinely worthwhile.

Did I Use The Key Activity Benefits?

The FlowRider on Liberty of the Seas. The Key can include private time or other benefits at selected onboard activities, although how useful these are depends on the sailing

The Key can include private time, faster access or discounts at selected onboard activities. Depending on the ship, this may include attractions such as the FlowRider or climbing wall. I didn’t use the special activity sessions on Liberty of the Seas. They were included, but they were not part of the reason I bought the package. The value of these benefits will depend on the sailing and how busy the ship is.

If you are travelling with children or teenagers who want to use the activities repeatedly, private time could be more useful. For me, the internet, embarkation lunch, luggage service and departure benefits were much more important.

Did The Key Include Tender Priority on Liberty of the Seas?

Liberty of the Seas docked in Getxo during a cruise using The Key
Liberty of the Seas docked in Getxo during my cruise. The Key was useful throughout the sailing for benefits such as VOOM internet, reserved seating and easier embarkation and departure

The Key includes priority departure from the ship at tender ports. Neither of my Liberty of the Seas itineraries included a tender port, so I wasn’t able to use this benefit. However, I have visited tender ports on other cruises and know that getting ashore can take time when large numbers of passengers are waiting for boats.

If your Liberty of the Seas itinerary includes a tender port and you want to explore independently or meet a tour, priority departure could be useful. If every port on your sailing uses a normal dock, this benefit has no value. So it’s worth checking your itinerary before including tender priority in your decision.

How Reliable Was VOOM on Liberty of the Seas?

WiFi icon and passenger typing a message on a mobile phone while using VOOM with The Key on Liberty of the Seas
VOOM internet is included with The Key on Liberty of the Seas for one device per person, making it one of the main benefits to compare when deciding if The Key is worth buying

The Key included VOOM Surf and Stream internet for one device. This was a major part of the value for me because I would normally buy WiFi anyway. I used VOOM for general browsing, email, messaging and keeping up with work while onboard.

The connection was good enough for normal use, although performance can vary depending on where you are on the ship, how many passengers are connected and the ship’s location.

The important point when deciding whether to buy The Key is to compare it directly with the separate price of VOOM. I did n’t think of the whole cost of The Key as additional spending. Instead, I looked at how much more it cost than the internet package I was already planning to buy. When that difference is small, the remaining benefits become much easier to justify.

How Did The Key Help at Disembarkation?

A busy disembarkation area in Southampton after Liberty of the Seas, with The Key sign marking the separate area for Key guests and their luggage

The departure benefits became one of the most valuable parts of The Key during my Liberty of the Seas cruise. Key guests had an à la carte breakfast in a designated area of the main dining room on the final morning. This was much calmer than trying to find space in a busy buffet while carrying hand luggage.

The Key also included choice departure and a separate luggage collection area inside the terminal. This became particularly helpful when Liberty of the Seas returned to Southampton later than planned because of bad weather. The normal disembarkation schedule had been disrupted, and the final morning could easily have become chaotic. Because I had The Key, I was able to leave at around the same time as the self-assist passengers without carrying all my luggage off the ship myself.

When I reached the terminal, my cases were waiting in the designated Key area. That was a much more useful benefit than it might sound before the cruise. Self-assist disembarkation can be quick, but you need to manage all your own luggage through the ship and terminal.

The Key allowed me to leave early while still putting my main cases outside the cabin the night before. For a solo traveller with more than one bag, that made the process considerably easier.

Which Benefits Mattered Most on Liberty of the Seas?

I didn’t use every benefit included with The Key during my Liberty of the Seas cruise. I didn’t use the spa discount, the special activity sessions or the priority tender benefit, and while the Royal Theatre seating was convenient, I wouldn’t describe it as essential.

The benefits that made the biggest difference for me were priority boarding, the carry-on luggage service, VOOM internet, the embarkation lunch, reserved seating in Studio B and the departure arrangements. Most of the strongest benefits were concentrated at the beginning and end of the cruise.

Embarkation day felt much calmer because I boarded early, dropped off my carry-on bags and had a reserved sit-down lunch instead of heading straight to a busy buffet. On the final morning, I could have breakfast in the main dining room, leave at a convenient time and collect my luggage from the separate Key area in the terminal. During the cruise itself, VOOM internet was the benefit I used most consistently.

Was The Key Worth It for a Solo Traveller on Liberty of the Seas?

Royal Caribbean The Key letter received on embarkation day outlining the included benefits
The Royal Caribbean The Key letter received on embarkation day explains the benefits included with the package and how to use them during the cruise

The Key can be easier to justify for a solo traveller because you only need to pay for one package. Royal Caribbean normally requires everyone aged six or over in the same cabin to purchase The Key, so the total cost can rise quickly for couples, families and groups sharing a cabin.

As a solo passenger, I only needed to compare the cost of one Key package with the cost of one VOOM internet package. Because I would normally buy WiFi anyway, that made it much easier to judge whether the extra cost was worth paying for the additional benefits.

The carry-on luggage service was also particularly useful when travelling alone. There was no one else to stay with my bags while I collected food or explored the ship, so being able to leave them at the Key drop-off point made embarkation day much easier.

The departure benefit was equally helpful. It allowed me to leave the ship early without having to carry all my luggage through self-assist disembarkation, which made a noticeable difference when travelling on my own.

The Key won’t always be good value for solo travellers, especially if the price is much higher than VOOM. However, when the two prices are close, the calculation is much simpler because only one package is required.

Who Would Get the Most Value From The Key on Liberty of the Seas?

The Key is likely to work best for passengers who already intend to buy VOOM internet. If you would normally purchase WiFi anyway, the additional amount you are paying for The Key can be much easier to justify.

It can also suit passengers who want a smoother embarkation day. Priority boarding gets you onto the ship earlier, while the carry-on luggage service means you do not have to keep your bags with you while waiting for the cabins to open.

The embarkation lunch is another useful benefit, particularly if you want to avoid the busiest period in the Windjammer. Instead of trying to find a table in a crowded buffet, you can sit down for a quieter meal in the main dining room.

Reserved seating can also add value if seeing the ice show in Studio B is a priority. The venue is smaller than the main theatre, popular performances can fill quickly, and some seats have much better views than others.

The departure arrangements may appeal to passengers who want to leave the ship early but do not want to carry all their own luggage through self-assist disembarkation. Being able to collect your cases from the separate Key area in the terminal can make the final morning much easier.

I also think The Key can work particularly well on a short cruise. When you only have a few days onboard, the extra time gained through early embarkation represents a more significant part of the trip, so those first few hours can feel more valuable.

Who Could Skip The Key on Liberty of the Seas?

Royal Caribbean app showing the VOOM Surf and Stream package included with The Key
Royal Caribbean The Key includes VOOM Surf and Stream internet for one device per person, so it’s worth comparing the price of The Key with VOOM before you buy

The Key may not be worthwhile if you don’t need VOOM internet. For me, the included WiFi is one of the main reasons the package can make sense, because I’d normally buy internet anyway. Without that value, you’re paying the full price of The Key for the remaining benefits.

It can also be harder to justify for families or groups because Royal Caribbean normally requires everyone aged six or over in the same cabin to purchase it. Even if the daily price looks reasonable for one person, the total cost can increase quickly when several people have to buy the package.

Passengers who are happy to carry their own hand luggage, eat in the Windjammer on embarkation day and arrive early for shows may also find that they don’t get enough extra value from The Key.

The Royal Theatre seating alone wouldn’t persuade me to buy it. I found the reserved seating more useful in Studio B, but even then I’d still treat it as an additional benefit rather than the main reason to purchase the package.

Priority tendering can be useful on the right itinerary, but it has no value if your cruise doesn’t include any tender ports. The same applies to activity sessions, spa discounts and other smaller benefits if you’re unlikely to use them.

For me, the decision comes down to the benefits you’ll genuinely use rather than the total number of extras listed in the package.

Is The Key Worth It on Liberty of the Seas?

Quiet pool deck on Liberty of the Seas during early embarkation with Royal Caribbean The Key
A quiet Liberty of the Seas pool deck during early embarkation. One of the benefits of Royal Caribbean The Key is getting onboard before the main crowds arrive

For me, The Key was worth buying on Liberty of the Seas, mainly because I was already planning to buy VOOM internet. That meant the amount I was really paying for the extra benefits was the difference between the two packages rather than the full cost of The Key.

For that additional amount, I received priority boarding, carry-on luggage delivery, a Chops Grille-style embarkation lunch, reserved seating in Studio B and a much easier departure at the end of the cruise. I didn’t use every benefit included with The Key, but I didn’t need to for the package to feel worthwhile.

The combination of a calmer embarkation day, reliable internet throughout the cruise and a more manageable final morning made the biggest difference for me. Those are the benefits I would focus on rather than trying to put a value on every single extra included.

I would consider buying The Key again on Liberty of the Seas when the price is close to VOOM. If the difference was much larger, I’d think more carefully about whether the embarkation lunch, priority services, reserved seating and departure benefits justified paying the extra.
